About the academy

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for kids, teens and adults in Alpharetta, GA, in a supportive, family-friendly room.

1932 to 2006

Who Carlson Gracie was

Carlson Gracie was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1932, the eldest son of Carlos Gracie and nephew of Hélio Gracie, the founders of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. He died in Chicago in 2006.

He fought 18 recorded vale tudo matches with only one loss, and had a long-running rivalry with Waldemar Santana.

Carlson pushed the art toward a tougher, competition-tested warrior style. He cross-trained his students in judo and wrestling and put their technique to the test in tournaments.

After he stopped competing he opened his own academy in Copacabana. It welcomed students from every background and produced a generation of champions, including Ricardo De La Riva, Murilo Bustamante, Mário Sperry, Wallid Ismail and Vitor Belfort.

His students went on to found some of the most important teams in the sport, including Brazilian Top Team and, from it, American Top Team.
